When metals and alloys cool and solidify, there is a reduction in metal volume that can cause voids (porosity) to occur which affect casting quality.
Non-metallic inclusions (flaws caused by impurities) in a casting are one of the most widespread causes of casting defects. 
It is often necessary to modify the composition of iron or steel melts by adding elements such as carbon or silicon, to remove undesirable constituents such as sulphur or oxygen, or to ensure that the casting solidifies with a specific metallographic structure. 
Sand binders are used for making sand moulds and cores and are mainly based on either organic resins or sodium silicate. They can be used in two ways
