When metals and alloys cool and solidify, there is a reduction in metal volume that can cause voids (porosity) to occur which affect casting quality.
The solution is to provide a sufficient supply of additional molten metal, a process called ‘feeding’. The reservoir that contains the additional metal is called a feeder, or riser. Foseco has made a major contribution to the technology of feeding castings and provides a comprehensive range of feeding systems which contribute to the efficient, economic production of sound castings. Our methoding engineers (case studies 2 & 7) also provide a unique service in designing and optimising the way a casting is made. This involves the development and use of highly specialised proprietary computer software which simulates a casting’s production and helps ensure ‘Right First Time’ design. |
